My Commentary On NASCAR Commentary
This past Sunday I met a few friends at a local hangout to make some final plans for a camping trip that we do every year. We decided to meet up at a sports bar that we all hang out at on a fairly regular basis. I figured since it is both basketball and hockey playoff time we could even catch a good game while we were there. But they had something else on the TVs at the bar.
No before I go where I’m going with this, I have to point out that I like auto racing. For one thing, Danica Patrick is hot! And the wrecks are always fun to watch. I have even been to an Indi series race and I had a blast. It’s amazing how fast the cars are plus you’re hanging out with a bunch of other people drinking beer while waiting to see a car wreck!
So the sports bar had the NASCAR race on. But they also had it cranked up on the overhead PA speaker system. Well I can tolerate and even enjoy a NASCAR race, but I had never paid attention to the commentary. The problem I had was the thick hillbilly accent that every single announcer had. These guys sounded like uneducated idiots.

Are you saying they sound uneducated because of their accent or because of what they are saying. There are some people that have flawless speech but what they say isn’t worth even mentioning.

They can be annoying at times. But if you can’t fight it, you just gotta find something to laugh about it or enjoy it. That’s what I do when something annoys me.

Well what dew ewe ’spect from Nayascar.
Actually, the guys doing the commentary are very knowledgeable about their sport. You just have to move past the accent.

I watch Nascar more for the wrecks than anything. You can tune in for the last 10 laps and get as much action as you will the rest of the race. The wrecks many times are the only reason to watch. At least for me anyway.

I agree you just have to take the goods with the bads as with anything in life. And maybe it is good for a laugh at how bad it is? Get it?

I get pretty tired of the commentary for all sports. Apparently it’s a pretty tough job to pull off successfully. Unless it’s an important game, I usually just ignore the commentary while reading a book until the commentators get really excited. Then I know the action’s heated up and it’s time to watch.

I like the Robin Williams skit about having the guy that does soccer games commentate on golf. I also would like to see golf commentators try to do NASCAR.

Make sure that the accent is not distracting you from the substance. Some folks sound polished but say absolutely nothing.

Sounds like this could be a new hobby for you. I’ve never gotten into NASCAR but it has a really huge audience with fans who spend a great deal of money and travel the country to see the races. Who knows, you might start to enjoy it. Good luck.
